The Really Great Idea . . .
Once I had this Really Great Idea. Not just any great idea. This was The Really Great Idea. It came to me in the middle of the night in a wonderful dream. I guess I will always remember the moment.
In the middle of a dream, I forced myself awake. I fumbled in the darkness for a pen and a piece of paper. I quickly wrote down the essence of my dream. What a great idea! This was truly The Really Great Idea! Why hadn't anyone ever thought of this before? It was so obvious! It was so simple! It was Grrrrreat!
Having just captured the idea that would soon make me rich and famous, I settled back to sleep with a smug smile on my face. I was genuinely blessed.
I awoke as usual until I recalled the events of the night. I tried to remember the context of the dream but it was already forgotten. Gone. Vanished. Not a problem. It was written down! The Really Great Idea was saved for posterity!
With a certain self-satisfaction, I reached for the scrap of paper left on the night stand to feast my eyes on The Really Great Idea. There it was in all its glory: on a tiny scrap of paper were the three words that were going to make me rich and famous beyond my wildest wishes:
I must have been pretty excited because I used three exclamation marks. I only wish I had concentrated a little bit more on my penmanship. Oh, well. There was nothing left to do but get dressed and go to work . . .
I still have that piece of paper. It is stored in a cardboard box amongst my momentos and old photographs. Occasionally, I will come across it and try again to decipher the cryptic message.
I guess I will always remember the moment I had that Really Great Idea. And, I guess I will always wonder what it was.
